Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to join these two people, as they embark on one of the most important financial planning journeys of their lives. Amid the dress, the flowers and the cake, life insurance admittedly may not seem consequential to a couple in the heat of planning a wedding. But the truth is, as important as it is to love and to cherish their future spouse, it is equally as important to ensure they are taken care of if the unthinkable happens.

Unfortunately, it seems many of the roughly 2.4 million couples that tie the knot each year are not taking the "as long as you both shall live" portion of their vows seriously. According to a Business Wire report, a 2007 poll by Allstate Insurance shows that the majority of couples are leaving their financial future to chance. In that poll about 61% of respondents had not purchased life insurance leading up to their wedding, and 64% of newlyweds still had not purchased a policy within the first three years of marriage. These statistics are staggering considering the hundreds of thousands of men and women who are widowed each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As you may have read, encouraging news was released in June by The National Center for Health Statistics citing that the average life expectancy in the United States is up to 78 years old. Despite the increase in life expectancy, married couples must be reminded that science has not figured out a way to prevent aging or dying. It also can do little to deter the accidents and catastrophes that are unfortunate, yet commonplace among society.

In other words, many of these newly married couples to which we have referred will never experience old age together as husband and wife.
Life insurance is an indispensable financial planning instrument that should not be taken lightly. A policy not only can help the beneficiary financially in the event of their spouse's death by alleviating any debts that may have incurred, but also it helps prepare for major life expenses such as having a child or buying a new home. Finances might not be the most romantic topic in the world, but it is one that subsequently can help these couples prepare for tomorrow.

Any experienced wedding planner can tell you the summer months of June, July and August truly encompass what is often referred to as "The Wedding Season." And although the newlyweds may still find themselves on Cloud 9 after diligently planning one of the most significant days of their lives, it is their financial representative's job to ensure the inevitable drift back to reality includes an in-depth look at this important financial decision.
