Nowadays you can easily find the letters SaaS in documents and articles. It is widely-used term which replaced so popular earlier terms as “Utility computing”, ASP (Application Service Provider) and On-Demand. SaaS means Software as a service. This is the delivery model of software application, and in this case the software vendor outworks web-native software application, hosts and independently or with the help of a third-party operates the application, which sholud be used by its customers in the Internet. Another advantage of this model is that customers will pay only for using of software but not for owning. Customers may use it through API written with the help of REST or Web Services, and which they can find in the Web.

Usually the term SaaS is connected with software outsourcing or business software, and it is typically considered as low-cost way of making business in order to get the same licensed and good software but without high costs and associated complexity.

The distinction between the previous software applications which are delivered through Internet and SaaS is that the latter way was created to intensify such web technologies as the browser, and in this way to make them web-native.

The applications of SaaS are usually priced on a basis of per-user, sometimes with a small number of users and additional fees for storage and extra bandwidth.

Main characteristics of SaaS software:

• network-based access to the software which is commercially available and its management;
• activities allowing to acces applications distantly through the Web, which are operating from central locations but not from the site of customer;
• the delivery of application which is not like one-to-one, but like one-to-many model, it includes also architecture, management, pricing etc.
The applications of SaaS are hosted by third-parties who usually do not have expertise of application development, and they are only managing services. Current net-native applications of SaaS are updated many times per day. that is why SaaS applications are much better than ASP (Application Service Provider), because its applications were updating not better than self-managed applications and there was poor performance.
The traditional approach of software outsourcing is that service provider is able to offer cheaper and more reliable applications than companies. That is why in recent years the use of SaaS applications is becoming more widespread, as reported by analysts.

This changing of terms and applications shows also changing in business needs and needs of clients. That is why the main goal of ASP is to focus on the possibilities of vendor and what vendor can give. The focus of SaaS is quite opposite – to know more about customer needs.
