The Shakuhachi Flute at its Finest

Usually the term shakuhachi refers to the standard size instrument, which is 54.5 cm in length, but it can also refer to many different sizes ranging from 1.3 - 2.5 shaku (39.4 - 75.7 cm) and longer. The shakuhachi is usually made from the root portion of a thick-walled bamboo (known as madake in Japanese). According to the experts the Shakuhachi flute is perhaps the simplest non-percussive instrument ever created.

Shakuhachi flutes provide a soothing and relaxing sound that greatly complement a daily relaxation routine or meditation ritual. If you have been into spa or gone for a professional massage you probably have noticed the Zen theme in the space and heard flute sounds that added calmness to the entire room. This probably would have been a Japanese bamboo flute.

If you are daring, consider trying to learn to play a shakuhachi flute yourself. It is really fun and enjoyable! The shakuhachi also makes a wonderful gift for adults and children alike.

If you want your child to learn a musical instrument, it is advisable to encourage children at the very young age. In fact children can start learning the shakuhachi from the age of three. Nevertheless do not push them too hard if you see that they are not comfortable and don’t have any interest. Shakuhachi flutes are meant to be fun and relaxing, if it becomes a stress or a chore to practice or play, then perhaps it’s better to just be a listener instead of a player. Even if you don’t play a bamboo shakuhachi is a beautiful and artful object that makes a nice decoration for any room.
