Patients should read the medication guide provided by your pharmacist before you start using accutane. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Results vary and treatment may take up to 1-2 months before the patient notices the full benefit of the medication. In addition, the manufacturer does not recommend long-term use of isotretinoin. Accutane is a brand name for isotretinoin, which is an ingredient used in medication to treat severe skin conditions. There have been reports of increasing adverse effects. These side effects include, dry lips and mouth, minor swelling of the eyelids or lips, crusty skin, nosebleeds, upset stomach, or thinning of hair may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Permanent side effects may include stunted growth, birth defects, bone disease and depression.
Unfortunately, accutane may also cause serious mood changes, violent behavior, thoughts of suicide or muscle pain. This medication may also make you more sensitive to the sun and affect your night vision. In many instances, your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Recent studies have shown that many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. However, you do experience any serious side effects tell your doctor immediately. Caution is advised when using this drug for both the elderly and children because they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially the effects on bones or muscles.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice you have these symptoms or other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. It is of the utmost importance that you contact a health care professional if you are experiencing any discomfort.
