The two different types of generators can serve some of the same purposes but juxtaposing their differences with your intended uses should give you a clear picture of which one will serve your needs in the best manner possible.

Portable generators, in most cases, are used in non-critical circumstances such as outdoor activities where power output demands are relatively light and the length of service is relatively short. Camping, outdoor events, and providing power to outdoor equipment are a few examples where a portable generator can deliver all the power needed to complete the job. Even if the time requirement for completion is longer than the run-time of the fuel source, portable generators can be re-fueled quickly to continue delivering power. Portable generators can also be used to provide backup power in the event of an outage but their lower level of power output and the need for re-fueling may make them an inferior choice in situations that require longer run times and greater delivery of power.

Longer run times and a higher level of generated power favor the implementation of a standby generator, especially in situations where an interruption of power for even a few minutes can cause problems. While standby generators don’t have the flexibility of portables, they provide three advantages over their smaller versions:

1) They are already connected to the home’s electric circuitry
2) They switch on automatically
3) They don’t require refueling
