By nature, a small business carries with it an element of risk the larger corporations don’t have to worry about. Unless the client is coming to you based off of a great testimonial, odds are they don’t know how good of a job you do. You don’t have the benefit of having been around for countless years. You don’t have a strong reputation in the business world.
Because of this, an important job is the task of assuaging any fears all those potential customers might have about you. The best way to combat these fears is by making yourself and your business look as professional as possible.
There are a number of techniques you can use to alter the way people view you. Some of the more basic details lie with the work environment you show them. When answering the phone make sure you always have a polite, business-like greeting. There shouldn’t be any distractions in the background or anything else that reminds them you’re working in your home.
The same goes for the look of your office should you have people come in for appointments. The truth is you’re going to have to try twice as hard as an established business to make sure you look the part.
Going beyond the way you look, the way you market yourself is also important. I know most small business owners aren’t going to have a lot of money for marketing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look into some of the more professional avenues.
Postcard marketing is a good example of a cost effective approach to marketing for the small business. Postcard printing isn’t very pricey compared to other forms, and it carries with it a strong correlation with bigger, more established businesses.
Creating a strong color postcard can do a lot to solidify the image of a professional in most people’s minds. Giving them good information about you as well as a picture to see what you look like can help break the barrier of the unknown that most small businesses need to deal with.
Postcard marketing can be a way of breaking the ice between you and whatever groups you’re marketing to. Because of the prevalence of mailing lists, you can direct your color postcards at a very specific group that’s most likely to need your services. This way your marketing budget gets put to the best use possible.
It isn’t an easy task getting people to view you as a serious business owner. The greatest challenge any new business will face is getting people to understand that you’re just as good as the places that have been around for years. Just make sure that you look the part, and don’t shy away from using something like postcard printing to effectively market yourself.
