There are so many practical uses for a tarp that you will most likely want to have several of them. At home they are often used to cover items, such as gas grills, riding lawnmowers, wood piles, boats, cars and other valuable items to protect them from the weather or from the sun. They also work well as a drop sheet when you are painting.
Canvas tarps are not used as much around the house as the polyurethane ones are. The canvas ones are stronger than the ones made from polyurethane, but they are not as waterproof. They are great for wrapping around furniture when you are moving because they provide a semi-cushioned cover that will keep it from getting banged up.
Another way to use them at home is as a sandbox cover. They will keep it clean and dry so the children can play in it whenever they want to. Canvas ones make excellent temporary shelters from the rain or the sun.
They are invaluable on a camping trip, and it is a good idea to take several along. Their most common use is as a ground cloth under the tent. Roll up the edges on all four sides and tuck them under. This keeps the bottom of the tent dry at all times.
They make great lean-to type shelters. Simply tie the corners to different trees at the angle that you need. This is a great way to protect the picnic table from the hot sun or from the rain.
Tarps are great things to have at home and when you go camping. Once you purchase one, you will be able to find many other ways to use it. You will most likely never want to be without a tarp again.
