The Lion King Rules The Broadway Stage

A review of the Broadway musical show The Lion King with advice for purchasing tickets.

Who can ever forget Simba, the adorable and mischievous little lion cub who always manages to get into trouble? The classic Disney film “The Lion King” won many awards and made its way into the hearts of millions with its enduring story about love, friendship and family values.

It introduced us to many characters like Mufasa, Simba, Nala, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa who remain unforgettable. Encouraged by the success of the film, The Lion King was adapted for the stage and it opened in Minneapolis in 1997. Receiving tremendous success, it moved to Broadway within a few months and has been running for the last ten years and is still going strong.

We all know and love the story of The Lion King. It is based in Africa and is about a lion cub, Simba, who is destined to become the next lion king after his father, the current lion king Mufasa. He and his best friend, Nala, are always up to mischief. Mufasa has a brother, Scar, who wants to become king himself and with the help of the wicked hyenas, he schemes to get rid of both Mufasa and Simba. He creates a stampede in which Mufasa is killed. Scar convinces Simba that it was all his fault and tells him to run away and never come back as the other lions would not forgive him. Poor Simba believes him and runs away.

Simba meets a meerkat, Timon and a warthog, Pumbaa who become his friends and he grows up living with them and learning their leisurely way of life. As an adult he meets Nala again who tells him about how Scar is ruining the kingdom and how they need Simba to go back and save them. Simba is in a dilemma but eventually makes the right decision.

The Broadway production of The Lion King is unique because of the use of animal masks over the heads of the actors so that their faces and expressions are not hidden from view. The audience sees both the character and the actor which creates a three dimensional effect. There is an extensive use of African masks and puppets in the show. As some critics have put it, the show is a visual masterpiece.

The Broadway production has all the popular songs from the Disney film like “I Just Cant Wait To Be King”, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and the ever popular “Hakuna Matata”. The characters are as lovable and enduring as in the film. You laugh with Timon and Pumbaa, feel sorry for Simba, feel anger and hatred towards the evil Uncle Scar and respect for Mufasa.

The play has won six Tony awards so far and is still running to packed houses at the Minskoff Theater. You have three options of getting tickets for The Lion King in Broadway. You can book tickets online, buy them in person from the box office or call a number to order them. It would probably be easier to get tickets for the shows on weekdays rather than weekends as those are always booked well in advance.
