Aside from training, the guts to handle explosive problems, knowledge of skills, and time are also needed in good coaching.
It takes self-control over our emotions when someone doesn't measure up to an essential mission that we, as superiors, are responsible for. Every time we coach, there's a danger of opening up conflict, opposition, and misunderstandings that can lead to discomfort. Coaching is no simple task. However, with patience and determination, it can work in your favor.
Many supervisors frequently ask us: "Should it be Coaching Skills or Coaching Steps?" The core of the Eight Step Coaching Model is about skills development. The main thrust on skills and behaviors sets apart the Eight Step Coaching Model from other coaching models.
"Be Supportive," the first step, for example, teaches teamwork, listening, and recognition. In the same vein, Step Two, "Define the Topic and Needs," discusses how to form inquiries and provide feedback.
The word "step" in the Eight Step Coaching Model should not be interpreted literally. It doesn't mean that you should go through every step each time you coach a representative. "Step" denotes a conceptual sequence, an improving development process as you coach.
A perfect example will be to discuss with the team member while you're waiting for your next appointment. In this situation, you can coach "fast" - you can cut right to the subject and goals. In some cases, you will need to take a longer time to show the elements in detail.
Discussing about bigger subjects like goal setting and teamwork will, of course, require a sit-down meeting. You just have to compromise. This will allow you to customize your take on the situaton. As you practice the Eight Step Coaching Method and use it often, you become more at ease. The more you use it, the less often you will see that you're working with a set plan.
The Eight Step Coaching Model performs best in an unplanned, casual setting, instead of a rigid and formal discussion.
When you are in a formal situation, we suggest you plan ahead, review the model, and prepare yourself in advance. When a coaching moment emerges informally or unexpectedly, we suggest you select the skills or steps that you have to bring out at that moment. Just always take note that coaching is a process, so you have the option to modify and supplement along the way.
