In some cases this can be pretty obvious; for example, if you have a business that sells collectible Star Wars Action Figures, therefore your target audience is Star Wars Action Figure collectors, right? You would not believe how many web sites are out there that have it all wrong. Apparently many people believe that search engines are mind readers, thinking that the search engine itself should know that when you say one thing, you actually mean another. Search engines are not mind readers; they're basically computer programs, and search engines need quite a bit of help in order to find your site thus connecting your potential customers/audience to your information/business. You must be specific in your keywords, content, and marketing strategy gearing everything towards one specific audience.
So, how do you find the audience that you are so desperately looking for. Well, it is easier than you think. There are three keys to identifying your particular and precise target audience. First, you have to network: your friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances are invaluable resources when trying to figure out who your target audience might be. Ask them questions about what and they might search for in your targeted topic, what they're looking for, what they wouldn't look for and so forth. Second, you must conduct research: check out your local library and skim through industry trade newspapers or magazines that pertain to your particular topic, or read newspapers online, seeing what the industry "buzz" is focused on. Note that you might want to think about subscribing to these resources if your topic is one that relies on changing information that is current. Lastly, you should join: the Internet is a marvelous and never ending resource for topic research. Browse and search for discussion groups then see what people are talking about in those groups. Always look for groups that have a great number of members, and keep note of the subjects discussed and when. Now that you know how to find a target audience, you now can market efficiently, precisely and with promise.
