When terrorism raised it's ugly head it created all kinds of changes from the U.S. Intelligence agencies as they sought to deal with unwanted intruders in the country. This created a lot more rules and a stricter observance of rules already in place for those coming and going in and out of the United States. These are the regulations you have to know about before you leave on your trip.
One of the most important regulations is the Western Hemisphere Travel Intitiative which has requirements for all people traveling to have a passport or another document to prove their citizenship and identity before they can come in the U.S. Here's a document list that satisfy this requirement: U.S. Passport; Military ID or Travel Orders; Nexus, Sentri, or Fast Traveler Cards; Enhanced, State Issued Drivers License; Tribal Card; Form I-872; or Native American Tribal ID card.
As of 2008 these documents are required to come into the United States or to come back in after travelling abroad. There may be additional documentation for other countries, more so because of involvement with the WHTI, countries like Canada and Mexico. It's just very important to know which documents you are going to need whenever you travel.
Traveling to TNQ or other Australian destinations is much easier than the countries of the Middle East, as they are more U.S. friendly, providing simpler rules to follow. But you should still have a good grasp of the impact of WHTI and how it impacts you while traveling in and out of the U.S.
