The SQL Server is a Microsoft based server for holding the crucial data of user. It is mainly built around the MDF file format. By many ways a user can lose the SQL data i.e. network breakdown, manual mistake, technical failure, etc. In this article, we will discuss about the ways for SQL database recovery.

SQL Recovery through the Failover Clustering (FC) method
Failover clustering is a method of creating automatic failover for a situation of hardware or software failure. By using this tool, one can develop clusters for single or multiple instances. Files lost via system failure or hard disk failure can be recovered with this method. These are the platforms which support the Failover Clustering Windows NT 4.0, 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, Windows Server 2003 and Datacenter Edition.

Drawbacks of Failover clustering

Failover clustering proves out to be costly in the long run and it supports only those servers which are in straight line. The data lost because of disk array failure cannot be recovered with this method. Moreover, it is not possible to create failover clusters at the database object level.

Database Mirroring (DM) for SQL Database Recovery

DM is a mechanism for maximizing the database availability for the full recovery model databases. Database Mirroring is not made for simple yet bulk logged models.

Limitations of Database Mirroring

Database Mirroring will work only if the primary database being recovered shares similarities with the principal database. Moreover, the exchange of content weakens the security of SQL server.

Peer-to-peer transactional replication method

Transactional replication is a good option for the applications that can edit the data in any database. Route traffic application shall be used for the databases which are not using server hosting.

Limitations of Peer-to-peer transactional replication method

This method works only for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. The databases being recovered shall have the same schemas. Peer to peer transactional method doesn’t work for the conflict detection or resolution.

Maintenance through warm standby server

Maintenance through warm standby server is possible with Log shipping and transactional replication.

Log shipping works with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.

Transactional replication is a process of replicating the data from server (the publisher) to other server with less latency.

Limitations

Log shipping can damage the database during the restoration process. It is also not possible to fix the table changes for automatic failover of applications.

In Transactional replication the Schema changes made at the publisher will not be available at the subscriber. It depends upon the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) connection which is no match to the Restore Transaction method.

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)

RAID is a tool that stores the damaged data on multiple disks.
Limitations

RAID consumes too much of user time and it cannot recover the data from multiple disk failure.

All the aforementioned methods for SQL Database Recovery are full of limitations. But one full proof method for accurate SQL Recovery is Kernel for SQL Database Repair. This tool can salvage the corrupt MDF files in just fraction of seconds.
