Worldwide, organizations are seeking energy-saving initiatives to check rising costs and carbon emissions as they have to manage their power-hungry data centers. Further, these data centers consume more energy than necessary and the organizations are obstructed by a division between IT and Facilities, which are both inter-dependent.

If IT and Facilities could work collaboratively, organizations can operate more efficiently and effectively while still meeting their business objectives. It means that with converging interdependent functions, organizations can serve dynamics to respond energy conditions, balancing workloads and improve efficiency with optimum power usages.

The necessary convergence of IT and Facilities

In our data centers, the amount of digital data being stored, shared and manipulated is growing fast as much as 25-50 percent a year. To handle such growth, according to latest data, we require at least 600 percent increase in server installations and storage expanding nearly 70 times in the first decade of next millennium. This enthusiastic growth comes at a price and requirement for more energy leading to more operational energy.

The IT department can tell you exact server utilization, computing capacity and network traffic, but available power capacity, battery runtime available and cooling capacity is determined by Facilities. If both group work separately, the optimum balance between cost and reliability will get disturbed. Hence, the potential efficiencies and advantages are missed altogether. For example, the low priced server might be so power-hungry that it is the costlier choice over the long term.

Now, organizations have to check, whether they can reduce energy costs and carbon footprint while meeting business objectives? How do they get best return on investment (ROI)?

If an organization purchases even a well-designed, up-to-date data center, it depends heavily on Facilities systems over which the IT team rarely has much visibility or control for its working efficiently. Hence, there is real time need for a collaborative effort from the two independent systems so that they can support systems that impact service level agreements (SLAs), reliability, costs and carbon footprint.

Unified monitoring—the essential foundation for convergence

Organizations can unite the IT and Facilities infrastructure, which optimizes real-time visibility into power conditions and both systems, can easily see when abnormal conditions threaten the IT infrastructure and exactly which business services are at risk. For example, after an overload in the circuit, send an alert notification to IT and Facilities, which should trigger the system to work on the re-scheduling of the loads on the data center.

Capabilities made possible by converging IT and Facilities

It will monitor power and thermal information, alerting the IT about it. It will incorporate energy into Facilities asset management workflows and control its power usage. The firm can track all the changes in energy usage over time and draft its policy accordingly. Now, the firm can determine optimal location for new servers and also tries for government rebates and incentives.

Conclusion

In the typical firm, IT and Facilities teams operate independently, but if they work in a holistic approach, they can optimize its function and can dramatically change the performance of the company.
