The temporomandibular joints are the most complex joints in the human body and are located on either side of your head in front of your ears connecting your jawbone to your skull. These joints pivot and glide and allow you to open and close your mouth and move your jaw from side to side.

A healthy and properly functioning temporomandibular joint requires a normal structure and normal functioning of the muscles, the nervous system, ligaments, bones, discs, connective tissue and your dental occlusion or bite. TMJ or TMD refers to temporomandibular joint disorder which is a group or conditions or disorders that involve these joints, the muscles that control the movement of these joints and your dental occlusion or bite.

Symptoms of TMJ/TMD

The symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint disorder are many and vary in severity, but may include all or some of the following:

• Head and facial pain
• Pain in and around the eyes and watery eyes
• Tooth pain and sensitivity
• The inability to open or close your jaw
• Ear pain
• Dizziness and nausea
• Difficulty swallowing
• Neck, back and shoulder pain
• Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
• Hearing loss

The pain associated with TMJ/TMD may be sharp and searing or dull and constant and may be located in the facial muscles, the neck, back and shoulders and can be present when you talk, chew or yawn. The pain associated with TMJ/TMD is often misdiagnosed as an ear infection, or a sinus or tension headache. Clicking, grating or popping sounds may be noted when the temporomandibular joint is activated by chewing or talking and your face may appear to be swollen. You may have difficulty swallowing and your jaw may appear to be deviated to one side.
