A tarpaulin - or "tarp" as they are often called - might be a neatly folded piece of canvas on a corner shelf in you garage. This unassuming cover has helped protect thousands of homeless victims in recent disaster areas such as Haiti. You must remember the cry for help when a large-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in January of this year. Tarps were one of the necessary items rushed-in as aide.

When you think of Haiti, you may think of a warm island in the Atlantic. It is indeed warm, but when it rains, it pours - literally. At one point, it was estimated that over a million people were wandering the streets as homeless victims following this disaster. When disaster hits, the first things that are considered are usually medical attention and water. People can live with little to no food for days or weeks, but water and medical care are paramount.

What is often forgotten though is where might people sleep? What will they use for shelter? Former President George W Bush was lambasted for announcing to the world that people might wish to consider sending blankets and water; but not to do so. "Just send us your cash, " he twanged!

Perhaps he was quick to recognize that the need for effective shelter was a major oversight by many? One would hope! A month after the Haitian earthquake, a top United Nations emergency relief coordinator stated that the two top priorities for the ravaged island-nation were shelter and sanitation. Some makeshift shelters were found to be made or tarps but many were dilapidated structures of scrap metal and bed sheets!

The next time you're covering your pleasure craft or collector car with one of your trusty tarps, you may wish to reflect on the life-saving usefulness of this underrated tool. Wars and disaster-torn nations have long depended on the life saving cover of the great tarpaulin. When will there be a special day for this oft-forgotten flag-like gem?
