Principally, there are four careers related to finance and accountancy that one can opt for. These are the careers of an accountant, banker, mortgage broker and a stockbroker.

A stockbroker works on behalf of his client that is the investor. The investor can be an individual, corporate or an institution. His job revolves around the Stock Exchange and concerns the buying and selling of stocks, shares or other financial instruments. A stockbroker’s career is an attractive one for several reasons starting with his remunerations! A successful stock broker can take home millions of pounds each year if one were not to count his bonuses. As a matter of fact, those who work from home for themselves and trade in foreign exchange may earn even higher amounts. Of course, there are risks that accompany such options since one will be playing with one’s own money. On the flip side a stockbroker has to spend long hours and often his life becomes stressful. But, if one is dedicated and analytical and has good skills in numbers one can be a successful stockbroker.

Before one seeks proper training to become a stockbroker, one must hold at least a B in GCSE level with Mathematics, high A level grades and a decent degree at the undergraduate level. This degree should preferably be in economics, finance or investment management since this will give the applicant an edge when trying to enter the larger companies.

Stockbroker training involves completing one of the Financial Services Association (FSA) qualifications and examinations following which one will need to achieve FSA Approved Person Status. The various FSA approved qualifications include the CFA Society in the UK Investment Management Certificate and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charter in Financial Analysis among others. The FSA approved status is obtained when the firm or institution one works for is satisfied that one can work unsupervised at a high level. Thereafter one is nominated for the status. One may also need to acquire additional training in order to concentrate on one’s specialist areas for career progression. Skills in foreign languages are always beneficial for those who are going to trade with foreign stock exchanges or in case one is based overseas.
