First you'll have to choose the type of drive you want for your new garage door opener. There are three kinds of drives to consider. The belt drive uses a rubber belt in order to open the door. These are popular as they are rather quiet and work smoothly.
Similar to the belt drive is the classic chain drive. The chain drive is one of the most commonly used of all the drives as it is usually the most economical; however, the sound of the chain pulling through the drive can be loud. While an excellent safety measure, the noise can alert you to someone entering your garage or that it will be coming down, you'll want to be sure the noise does not disturb you or possibly your neighbors.
The final type is the screw drive. These are good choices because they aren't too expensive, make only a small amount of noise, and are easy to install and maintain. The quality of the drive also depends on the manufacturer, so it is good to shop around and compare prices, features, and warranties.
After you have chosen the type of belt drive, there is the matter of a garage door opener. If you're the forgetful type, a keyless entry pad may be the best option for you. This is placed in a convenient location outside of the garage where you can drive up and enter a simple code to let you in. This way you won't have to worry if you lose the garage door opener or the batteries die. It's also very safe as you can change the code every so often to ensure nobody catches on to it.
Another type of garage door opener is the remote control or clicker. These come in various sizes, and some are even small enough to fit on your key ring. The most common type has a single button that simply opens up the door, but some have additional features that can control multiple doors or lights.
When choosing a garage door opener system, you'll also want to think about other features available. You'll also need to consider how much horsepower you'll need which depends on the size and weight of your door. More power is always better if you're unsure as a week engine can break easily or become a safety concern.
Some models come with a battery backup option in case of an electrical shortage which comes in handy if you live in an area prone to blackouts. Warranties will also vary by manufacturer and model, the longer and more comprehensive the better.
