Symptoms of TMD/TMJ
The symptoms of TMD/TMJ are varied and often include, but are not limited to the following:

• Head and facial pain
• Pain around the eyes and watery eyes
• Tooth pain and tooth sensitivity
• Ear pain
• Dizziness
• Difficulty swallowing
• Neck and back pain
• Jaw locks in open or closed position

Temporomandibular joint disorder may cause pain the facial muscles and jaw which then radiates into the neck and shoulders. The pain increases when speaking, chewing or attempting to yawn. The joint in front of the ear is usually the focus of the pain, though pain may be present anywhere on the skull, face or jaw. Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or hearing loss may also be present. There are times TMD is misdiagnosed as an ear infection.

Clicking, grating and popping sounds may also be heard when the temporomandibular joint is moving, and your face and mouth may appear swollen at times. The jaw may also appear deviated to one side and you may have difficulty swallowing.

Headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting are not uncommon with TMD. The headache of TMD is often confused with a tension or sinus headache, but the cause can determined with a thorough examination by a dentist experienced with the symptoms of TMD.

The pain caused by TMD can be sharp and searing or dull and constant. Medication for pain does not treat the underlying cause of the pain. A neuromuscular dentist treats the cause, not the symptoms of the pain associated with temporomandibular joint disorder.
