Summer Time Crafts

Oh yes, it’s that time of year again where the weather is hot, or not in the case of the north west of England.

We always do it to ourselves but alas remain disappointed in the lack of sunshine we get every year. So we then aim for hotter climes, yet at the same time have the constant worry that the people we book with don’t go bust and leave us stranded in the hotter climate but no accommodation to go with it and an empty wallet!

If you choose to remain calm and surround yourself with your regular views and appreciate your own comforts, then this is the best time of year to take in your home surroundings and think what is you’d like to change about it. The list is endless, possibly redecorate, give the walls a fresh lick of paint, but what about the rest? The state of our economy has left our budget for home refurbishment somewhat low. Here’s a few tips to help you out not only with the budget but to give your home a new identity.

If we start with garden, plain big plastic plant buckets are cheap and cheerful, you add that extra touch of elegance by painting the planter in whatever colour you desire or simply paint a pattern on tub. Fill with compost and plant flowers that can be purchased cheaply by the tray. Same concept with hanging basket, however you can add ribbons to the outside. This starts off the transformation by adding colour to the entrance of your home.
Walls may seem a little a bare with just paint yet you can’t afford the luxuries of wall furniture, how about using stencils to create to your personal coving art or even design your own stencil dado rail? When it comes to bathrooms and kitchens, you may have tiles, plain tiles that now just look dull. Refresh them with tile stencils and add a bit of colour to those walls.

Now the garden and walls are complete it’s time to look at the flooring, pull back those carpets and see if you have any hidden gems lurking beneath. If you discover wood it may be an idea to hire a floor sander and give the floor a coating of varnish and there you have it a new floor, the house is starting to look great! If there is no wooden floor why not hire a carpet and upholstery washer, bring new life back into your old carpet or rug and even give the sofa a quick once over. Straight away you’ll see that your house is looking brighter and better, this not only helps the house but is amazing for your own well being too. There’s nothing better than being surrounded in your own beautiful work. Once the sofas and floors and walls and garden are complete, time to look at the furnishings. Have those scatter cushions seen better days? We could re-cover those ourselves, paint picture frames and vases etc. The list is infinite and before you know it the summer holidays have flown by and now you can relax in your cosy new home.
