The first thing to look into is your working visa. Australia is part of the “Working Holiday Maker” (WHM) program, geared towards younger travellers looking for short-term jobs. Partnerships currently exist with 19 countries, including the US, Canada, Thailand and various European ones, for people aged between 18 and 30 with no children.
In Australia, the WHM program comprises the Working Holiday (Subclass 417) visa and the Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa. Both visas allow you to stay for up to 12 months, work for a limited period of time and a short period of study. Applicants from countries with a Work and Holiday visa arrangement with Australia are required to meet additional criteria to be eligible for the visa program.
Opportunities for skilled workers:
If you have professional skills and qualifications behind you and are prepared to be flexible about where you live, you’ll find a broad range of opportunities too. Several sectors in particular are officially classed by the Government as 'Migration Occupations in Demand'. These include engineering, health and medical, IT, accounting and the trades. It's a surprisingly long list including professions as diverse as Cartographer, Archivist, Radio Journalist, Dietician and even Seafarer!
The Internet is the best place to find your next job. You could run a Google search on your job title and city name, such a ‘bar staff in Sydney’ and browse through results. You could also check local job sites too.
You’ve probably heard about Gumtree, the local classifieds site. They’re big in Australia too. Gumtree.com.au lists thousands of jobs across Aussie capital cities and regions, from casual jobs to permanent positions across a broad range of industries. Give them a try – you could land your dream job today, or open up opportunities that could lead to a job later down the road.
