Business books leap to the top of the best seller lists, and business consultants and coaches are in high demand. Perhaps these are signs of a commitment to success, or rather, a fear of failure. In fact, many may hope that if they work really hard now, they will be able to coast in the future. A reasonable goal, but now Allen says coasting is actually dangerous.
When we coast we give up elements of control. To “stay involved with the pedals” we have to be fully engaged with all aspect of our vehicle…our business. What would that look like for the solopreneur or small business person?
1. Know where you want to go? In other words, what’s your vision? Many businesses start with a clear vision, but it often gets overshadowed by the everyday tasks of running the business. To stay engaged, one has to keep the vision clear and prominent as a reminder of why they are in business in the first place.
2. Know the route you want to take to get there. There are many ways to get somewhere. As a business person one must decide what is the route that makes the most sense for them. How do you plan to make your vision a reality? Do you want to open up two new stores in the next year? Do you want to self-publish your book and distribute it nationwide? Do you want to find a business partner that will help you diversify the services you offer? “There” is the vision; getting there is the business plan.
3. Make sure that your itinerary (To-Do List) is heading you in the right direction. If your To-Do list is full of non-essential items, then important essential items can get pushed down the list, or off it entirely. To be involved with the pedals of your business, make sure that your to-do's truly reflect your goals. Your properly prioritized daily work implements the business plan.
Coasting, now or later, in your business may seem an idealistic goal but in fact it can put you in great danger. Staying involved with the driving of your business guarantees you will not lose momentum and will keep you headed toward success.
