Some can carry the entire wheelchair of an elderly or handicapped person or can only accommodate the individual while his or her chair is lifted up by another individual or left at the bottom of the stairs while another wheelchair waits at the top of the stairs. These days, more and more of these contraptions are designed to be able to lift the entire wheelchair for the convenience of the person. Stair lifts give the elderly or handicapped user ease of mobility and independence to a certain extent.
Types of Lifts
There are several different types that are used, namely the straight, custom curved, platform and outdoor variety. The first kind is the most common and is so called because it fits a straight flight of stairs. This means that there is little need to customize the rails except for the length of the stairs making for a shorter installation time. The custom curved type of device is basically similar to the straight except that the rails are customized to fit the house's curved stairway.
These types of stair lifts are more expensive than the straight ones and may need more time to design, customize measure and install. Platform lifts are similar to elevators in the sense that they have a landing on which the entire mobility seat of the individual is wheeled unto and have a heavier capacity than the previous two. The outdoor lift is similar to this but is, instead, installed outdoors.
Most, if not all, of the stair lifts found in homes and commercial establishments are powered by rechargeable batteries attached to direct current. This system enables the lift to charge when not in use. This gives users the convenience of still being able to use them even during a power outage until such time that the charge in the battery is used up.
The convenience and peace of mind that these devices give their users is irreplaceable. The elderly and the handicapped are given a wider range of freedom and they can basically be independent in terms of mobility in the house.
