Microsoft Office Outlook personal folders (.pst) files do not free up the deleted items space until you compact the file. If your PST has grown large and you delete unwanted items from Deleted Items folder, delete messages permanently or empty the Deleted Items folder , it will not bring any changes to its size till compaction is done. MS Outlook includes a AutoCompact feature that takes place in the background when the system is idle. If you use MS Outlook 2000, you can't rely on this operation alone as it will compact much lesser than what is expected. As a result, your PST will still remain with large file size. However, one of the suitable options to reduce the PST size is to perform PST Split using a third-party utility.

For instance, suppose you have large PST in Outlook 2000. To avoid the consequences like slow Outlook, PST corruption etc., you decide to regularly compact the file by enabling AutoCompact feature. Cause

Microsoft starts the AutoCompact process when it is idle for about 30 minutes before the PST is disconnected. This is to ensure that the file may not remain locked for an indefinite time interval after the application has been left open. The process results into smaller compaction if the amount of data to be compacted is large. For this, Outlook is required to leave the connection to PST opened for a considerable time interval after being idle.

2-You can increase the PST file connection time duration by editing the following registry:
