Space…The Final Frontier?

Disconnecting got me connected. I connected back to me and back to God. Getting connected got my breathing back to normal and my volume button turned back down. It made me relax and smile. I slowed down and looked at spider webs with my nieces. I listened and just seemed to care more.

I disconnected my iPod on a bike ride the other day. It seems like a small thing to do but I counted it as a big victory. How so? Well, I was feeling the edgy feeling. You know what I mean. It’s that feeling when your breath is more shallow than normal and if you were a volume dial you would be cranked a little beyond comfortable. Don’t get me wrong. I love my iPod and I was having fun rocking out and singing the “Give it to me, Baby” song (Yes, I know that might be a bad visual for you, but I know you pretend to be a hot rock star, too.). Instead of “Just Push Play” like the Aerosmith song would suggest, I just pushed stop. It was still, sunny and beautiful as I biked the arboretum trail. I heard a bird tweet. I took a deep breath.

“So what?” you might ask. “How can this help me in my pursuit of great health in body, mind and spirit?” Well, consider this. By disconnecting, I got connected. In the quiet from the storm of iPods, e-mails, big to-do-lists, rushing here and there and worthy goals to pursue, I got quiet. In the pause of quiet I found space. Space to just be. Space to look. Space to observe and let life happen. And it felt good. It felt like visiting with a long lost friend or eating a spoonful of chocolate frosting.

In the rush, rush, busy, busy, iPod/e-mail world I realized that I was losing space.

It also felt a bit awkward to be back in space. Like I should be filling the moment with something. I noticed that after a few minutes I wanted to turn my iPod back on, but resisted. In the quiet, I realized that I had not spent any alone, non-rush, let life happen time with a person that I really love…me!

Disconnecting got me connected. I connected back to me and back to God. Getting connected got my breathing back to normal and my volume button turned back down. It made me relax and smile. I slowed down and looked at spider webs with my nieces. I listened and just seemed to care more.

What about you? Observe your day. Take a bit to notice the constant stimulation from the TV, radio, iPod, cellular phone, e-mail, rushing family here and there, house projects and work projects that must get done. Meals get rushed or get the dreaded drive by, workouts get postponed, and conversation with friends and family is hurried at best or at worst on post it notes and text messages. Just writing about this makes me tired. How about you? Where is this pace leading you five years from now? What will you have missed?

Space...the final frontier. Let’s both disconnect something today…even for a few minutes. Just be. Slow it down. Connect back with a very wonderful person…you.

Today I will disconnect _________________________ and observe the effects.
