If you're from the Northeast with retirement fast approaching, you may be torn with the desire to move someplace warm - yet don't want to move away from your children, grandkids and siblings. South Jersey adult communities offer a nearby respite from the hectic city life of New York or Philadelphia.
A recent National Institute on Aging study found that half the Americans over 60 who moved to a new state for retirement chose Florida, California, Arizona, Texas or South Jersey adult communities. There are over 43,000 retirement units - many in Gloucester County adult communities.
''I'm proud of our retirement communities,'' said Mayor Peter Garibaldi of Monroe Township, home to two South Jersey adult communities. ''They are no financial burden on the township. They maintain their own streets and security system,'' he added.
Over half of the 16,000 people who live in Monroe Township are in one of the South Jersey adult communities - a number which is expected to grow when Concordia expands its empire to more than 2,000 new single family residences that will include access to public spaces, an exclusive golf club, fitness center and saunas.
Ocean County hosts 24 South Jersey adult communities, which is the largest number of retirement homes in the Northeast quadrant. The county population doubled in the 1970s and saw an additional 66% population boom in the 1980s. The Manchester Township, situated in the heart of Ocean County, grew from 7,550 people to 27,987 in just ten years due to retiree-attracting South Jersey adult communities. Crestwood Village is a popular epicenter for retirees, which offers 10 clubhouses, a bowling league, a bridge club, art classes and a travel club. Most of the residents come from New York City, Northern New Jersey and Philadelphia, says general manager George I. Leopold.
Cedar Glen Lakes is another one of the South Jersey adult communities situated in Ocean City that offers independent living in a quiet neighborhood without crime, teenage hooligans patrolling the streets or noisy 20-something neighbors.
''Our relationship with the retirement communities has been a long and very happy one,'' said James B. Kennedy, Ocean County Administrator.
''We give them one of the lowest tax rates in the state and in return they put no strain on our court, police and education systems while their spending supports an awful lot of jobs. It's your ideal population.''
Another darling place to retire is at the Rossmoor Village, one of the Gloucester County adult communities situated in the Monroe Township.
