Our culture overrates thinness, causing the line between beauty and eating disorder to become hard to draw. This is particularly elusive among those girls and young women that participate in activities that demand extreme thinness such as modeling, gymnastics, and ballet dancing.
Anorexia Nervosa typically starts out innocently enough as "normal" dieting, but evolves into scrupulously strict caloric restriction and energetic and prolonged physical activity.
In order to warrant a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa, three symptoms must be present at a level of seriousness that is concerning: a very low body weight, loss of menstrual period, and a deformed body image. Of course, each of these occurs on a continuum and you can have elements of all three at a mild level and that does not require a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa. A guideline rendered by the DSM-IV for abnormally low weight is that it be less than 85 percent of what is anticipated given the person's height and age.
Many women have casual irregular or even missed periods, especially during adolescence. Every thin girl or woman with a skipped period does not inevitably have Anorexia Nervosa. Most often amenorrhea in Anorexia Nervosa goes on for many months or even years and the DSM-IV suggests that at least three consecutive missed periods must occur before the diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa is sanctioned.
A number of benefits are available from participating in psycho-therapy. Psycho-therapy can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, body image issues, life transition issues and many more. Many people also find that psycho-therapy can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage problems, and the stresses of the daily life.
