There is actually a medical condition for the excessively hairy appearance on a woman called hirsutism. Hirsutism occurs in up to 10 percent of American women and presents as coarse dark hair in areas that are usually absent of it. Examples include facial regions such as and appear as mustaches, beards, or sprouting from the back and abdomen. This can occur due to genetics or an overage of male hormones such as testosterone.
For many years, males and females have tried to eliminate excess or unwanted body hair with a variety of temporary methods. Examples include shaving, waxing, tweezing or electrolysis. Many times, the hairs would simply grow back and sometimes reappear even thicker and coarser. Lasers have been more effective in completely or almost completely eliminating growth in certain areas.
Here’s how it works: When a person goes to their dermatologist or physician for an initial consultation, they will be asked about their prescription drugs, their history of unprotected sun exposure and their skin and hair coloring will be notated, as all of these details have an effect on the success of certain lasers.
During the procedure, a beam of light is aimed at the problem area in order to damage and destroy the follicles. The follicle is where each hair originates. When it has been damaged, there will no longer be growth. Several treatments later, there will be 80% or more less hair growth. It often takes six to eight appointments with the laser in order to achieve this level or eradication.
Although this treatment is safe and effective when performed by a reputable doctor, every medical procedure has risks of complications. Some risks include blisters, scars, scabs and crusty appearance. These problems usually clear up within a short time, however. Some other complication possibilities include textural alterations, darkening or lightening of patches and hair that grows back with a different appearance than that which surrounds it. It may end up thinner or finer, for example.
Several types of lasers are available to perform this removal process, including the diode, ruby, alexandrite and IPL that stands for intense pulsed light. Certain lasers are better for darker skin tone, such as those with longer wavelengths, while others are preferable for lighter complexioned individuals.
If a person would like to create a smoother look or treat their hirsutism, they should make an appointment for a consultation with a dermatologist or physician who specializes in laser hair removal systems.
