Sleep Apnea Symptoms

The Greek word “apnea” means “want of breath.” Sleep apnea sufferers endure the stoppage of their breathing for periods of time at least ten seconds. This can happen over five times in an hour. Disrupting quality sleep creates many health risks over the course of time.

When many people think of snoring, to them it is just annoying and disruptive. However, frequent, loud snoring could also be a sign that the person has sleep apnea. This life-threatening condition affects more than 20 million people in this country, including children. This snoring is a sign that a person’s sleeping patterns are interrupted, leading to reductions in the sufferer’s quality of life. Valuable sleep is essential, just like a proper diet and exercise.

Symptoms of sleep apnea
Sleep apnea can be detected through a variety of symptoms. Many experience a combination of the following symptoms and it’s best to discuss these with a dental professional. Some people feel increased daytime drowsiness and sluggishness along with repeated morning headaches and migraines. Short term memory loss happens too, and some find they can’t lose weight because their metabolism is slowed due to sleep apnea. It also inhibits concentration and creates problems with memorization. Poor job performance could be a sign, especially if that person tosses and turns during the night and wakes up periodically. And of course, heavy snoring is a cause for concern.

Over time sleep apnea can create a multitude of health issues. Heart ailments, hypertension, muscle pain, strokes, morning headaches and excessive drowsiness are just a few. Even with milder cases of this condition, people know that they snore on a regular basis. However, they aren’t aware that this is a symptom of a larger problem. This might lead to potentially life-threatening issues because it inhibits quality, restful sleep. Something to also remember is that reduced alertness and increased sleepiness could lead to things like falling asleep while driving. Sleep apnea can inhibit children’s ability to learn at school.
