Most people aren't born with flawless skin, and unfortunately things just get worse with age. Improper skin care during your youth can haunt you well into adulthood and most effects are permanent and can't be reversed with miracle creams and other topical procedures. To truly see a difference, you need a procedure that can reach deep into the skin's surface and reveal the clear, unblemished cells that lie within.

If you have spent many years neglecting your complexion, a chemical peel can help revive your appearance and put you on the right path to beginning a healthy routine. These help smooth out the texture and color of the face, eliminating blemishes and in some cases even treating light wrinkles.

There are many different types ranging from mild to heavy, depending on your goals and the problems that need to be addressed. Alpha hydroxy treatments are the lightest peels available and are often self-applied after instruction and a prescription from a dermatologist. Alpha hydroxy ones gradually remove the first few layers, helping to clear mild acne, diminish the appearance of age spots and other discolorations, and to reduce the appearance of fine lines. There are few complications associated with this treatment, but initially the cream may cause dry, flaking skin, mild burning and redness.

A stronger procedure is a retinoic acid peel or Retin-A. Usually this kind must be applied by a professional, such as a plastic surgery or dermatologist. This chemical peel reaches into the deeper layers in order to address issues such as scarring, wrinkles, sun damage, and discoloration. This treatment will result in peeling by the third or fourth day to the extent that you may need to miss one or two days of normal activity. Although not painful, your complexion will look quite dry and red which may cause some discomfort.

Deeper ones include the strongest of all procedures, a phenol ones. These can dramatically transform a person's complexion, showing marked improvement in the depth of wrinkles, sun damage, and other discoloration from previous acne or ageing. Since the chemicals are quite strong, most patients will need to be placed under anesthesia.

You may need to stay indoors for a few weeks to heal and it could take up to two months for all redness and tenderness to disappear. Fortunately, many people find the treatment worth any discomfort. The results may even last for many years if you continue a proper regime.

There are risks with all chemical peels which range from mild such as brief redness or tenderness to more severe such as permanent change in skin tone or loss of freckles. Although some treatments are fairly mild, it is wise to always consult with a trained professional, such as a dermatologist, beforehand.
