Should I get One-Day Dental Implants?

Missing teeth can create for an awkward smile appearance. In addition, missing teeth can change the tension of your bite and allow adjacent teeth to slip into the empty spaces, altering the shape of your jaw.

As such, it is important to have missing teeth replaced as soon as possible.

There are several options for replacing missing teeth, but dental implants remain the only permanent solution. Dental bridges and dentures have long been effective solutions, but fail to offer the same strength and aesthetic benefits of dental implants.

What are One-Day Dental Implants?

One-day dental implants are a relatively new development in implant dentistry. As the name implies, with one-day implants, you can have your dental implants placed and fitted with dentures in one office procedure. This may seem like an attractive option if your smile makes you feel uncomfortable but, despite the added convenience, one-day implants are not always right for certain people.

Considerations for One-Day Implants

There are several factors influencing the consideration of dental implants. One of the considerations will be the structure of your jaw. One-day implants rely on a sufficient amount of jawbone not requiring bone grafting. Many patients do not need bone grafting, but others will require more bone density to prevent implant failure.

With certain types of one-day dental implants, bone grafting is not necessary; but one-day implants still do not allow your body to undergo the process of osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process in which your implant is integrated and bonded with your jawbone like a natural tooth root. Osseointegration is what enables your implant to provide a lifetime of support. When this step is skipped, you increase your risk for implant failure.

In addition to not allowing your implant proper time to integrate into your jaw, one-day implants may not offer the same aesthetic appeal as traditional implants. With one-day implants, you are fitted with dentures that, while matched as closely as possible to your natural teeth, have not been customized to your smile.

With the traditional dental implant procedure, the tooth restorations that cover your implant are customized to precisely match your adjacent teeth in color, shape and size. This provides for a durable, beautiful smile. One-day implants often do not provide these same benefits.

In the end, the implant procedure you choose to have should be determined by your dentist. Working with an experienced implant dentist, you can choose from the tooth replacement options that are right for you.
