There are three major considerations:
1. Price
2. Quality
3. Reliability
These key elements must be balanced when you choose who to shop with on-line, no matter what types of items you are looking for. Getting the best price is important, but not at the expense of Quality and Reliability!
So where do you start?
Price:
Price comparison sites are good start for searching price. Google's Product search is one of our favorites, because almost all of the most common web-stores and comparison sites will show up there.
You will quickly find that there is an enormous price range for similar items. A search for Oriental Feng Shui Wall Fan will give you similar products ranging from $9.99 to $12.00 for the same items. So do you jump for the cheapest price? You might, but you want to be sure that you balance you three key elements!
Quality:
In the example above, we are looking at identical products from different retailers. At this point, quality is going to be the same as the product is the same. However, we are often looking at various similar products from different retailers. We can see the pop-up picture, but how do you judge quality? The answer is in the fine print, looking at a retailer's contact page, return policy, and terms and conditions page is important! You can begin to judge the quality of a product by getting an idea of how confident the retailer is in their own goods. Do they except returns? Do they have an easy to find phone number? How about a physical address? Do they spell out clearly how to return an item? Before you buy, look for these tell tail signs of quality.
Reliability:
When we consider the reliability of an on-line retailer, we are really talking about customer service. Does the service stop when the product is paid for and out the door? Or will they back their sale during later issues. All retailers make errors along the way, wrong products ship, orders go out late, and items arrive broken, but how they handle those issues once they happen is the key to a positive shopping experience! So how do you know how reliable a retailer will be before you buy and before there is an issue? Start by looking for reviews from other shoppers. Reviews posted on independent review sites like www.resellerratings.com are the most reliable. Although keep in mind that new sites may not have many reviews, and if you have a positive or negative experience with a retailer, you can post your own thoughts!
It is also recommended to pick up the phone and call a retailer before making a purchase. If they don't answer, or don't return your call right away, then you can be fairly sure that the customer service won't be getting any better once you have paid them!
Finally, read those return polices carefully. Retailers are bound by law to uphold their posted return policies, so you can feel confident that if they post an item is returnable, you will be able to return it!
With these three elements of on-line shopping you are ready to search for the best price, the best quality and the best service. Be sure to balance the three to get the most rewarding on-line shopping experience.
