Some semblance of traffic safety in India could be observed at the major intersections and arterial roads of the country in general and in the metropolitan cities in particular. Going by the reactions available from visitors to the country road safety in India is about a roller costar ride on a shaky wheel.
“They drive so close to each other and at such a speed that you feel that an accident is always round the corner,” says Sabrina from Netherlands, who was visiting the metropolitan cities of the country and had had good experience of city traveling.
Bumper to bumper, within breathing distance and pedestrians crossing roads when the vehicles are plying at the top speed….some traffic it is, goes the reaction.
Sabrina, all along her itinerary in the country, wondered if there was a traffic authority in India. And if there was one what is it doing about the road traffic. If this is the situation in the big cities, what must have been going on the small cities, townships and villages, she asked.
True, the situation is dismal. The traffic authorities in the country are not able to exercise control enough even in the big cities where there are resources and wherewithal, and best of trained personnel to overlook the road traffic.
Bangalore traffic, Delhi traffic, Mumbai traffic or Chennai traffic, the situation does not differ much from one place to another. It is the same. Thus traffic jams and resultant snarl ups, commuters losing their cool on each other, everyone trying to move first….make for a typical traffic-density laden road.
Needless to say traffic rules and the safety are thrown to the winds until there is a strong monitoring and punishing system in place. Visitors like Sabrina happen to India just every day and they do carry back their unpleasant impressions on the traffic situation in the country. The typical one about the highways are the routine incidents of road rage, which Indians commonly and routinely come across. And can do nothing about it.
