SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a very broad and in-depth subject. The purpose of this article is merely to introduce the beginner to the basics and to give them a realistic view of what to expect in promoting their web site.
I am working on the assumption that you are involved in an online business and that you have a web site which you want to promote. Your web presence works much like your physical presence---just as you have a precise address within a city, within a state, within a country---your web site has a precise address, within search criteria, within the world-wide web. You can give people directions whereby they can drive to your house or apartment; you can also give people directions whereby they can "drive" to your web site.
Merely having a web site does you absolutely no good whatsoever. When you first get a web site, no one but you has any clue that you have it. It isn't advertised for you---it isn't listed for you---it is simply sitting out there in cyberspace waiting for you to do something with it. This is as true of sites that are provided for you in various business opportunities as well as for those sites that you build on your own.
The initial steps are: getting a domain name (address), getting a host (a company that will run the web site on its servers), and finally getting the site optimized for the search engines (Yahoo, MSN, Google, etc) so it will come up when people do a search for whatever it is you're promoting. This last part is accomplished by selecting keywords or keyword phrases that people type in the search bars on the search engines to find what they are looking for.
All of these steps are important and they are all interrelated and work together to make your site successful and easy to find. Once you have decided upon a domain name and a host, you will then need to decide what search words or phrases are used most often by people looking for what you are offering. There is very strong competition for the most popular search words and phrases for any given category, so when you are starting out, it is best to start with keywords that are moderately popular, but not extremely competitive. In this way, you can start building traffic to your site and work your way to the top. This will come into sharp focus once you get started with it; site ranking is a fiercely competitive "sport".
Another wrinkle in site optimization, is content---what type of readable material you have on your site which promotes your product or service. The more quality content you have, the better, so this is something you will want to do on an ongoing basis. There are numerous ways to accomplish this, but that's another whole subject---just keep in mind that keywords and content will be two items of high priority in maintaining a successful web site.
There are many SEO tools and software programs available that will maximize your efforts and even automate a lot of the repetitive tasks that must be done on a continual basis. There are also various services that will perform much of the work for you for either a one-time or monthly fee depending upon the service performed. Budget considerations usually factor in very heavily when starting out, so it is a good idea to learn as much as you can about SEO and get as much hands-on experience as you can. It is truly amazing when you do this stuff yourself and then see the results of what you have done. Once it gets rolling, it takes on a life of its own.
