I discovered this while having lunch with a friend of mine, Adam Wiseman, who is a pinch more socially active then I am. By a "pinch" I mean I design websites, enjoy spending my money, taking vacations and generally think only of myself, and he works in social services and has created a non-profit charity! Well, I told him I had ordered a subscription to Maxim.
He looked disappointed, not that I had chosen Maxim, rather he said I should have ordered it through his site. Well, I am no fool, I know how affiliate programs work, so of course he wanted me to order it from him, but then he told me all about his new organization called the Better Day Alliance Foundation which is doing a lot of online fundraising through their site at http://www.betterdayalliance.org. He explained that he had set up what amounts to a mini-mall for good! A whole slew of online affiliate programs in which all the proceeds go to the Better Day Alliance Foundation which supports other charities in doing special projects that they could not otherwise afford! So far most of the money made from it has been from himself and his partners ordering things they would have ordered anyhow! Ink jet ink, magazine subscriptions, even sending flowers to his wife (I guess even he gets in trouble sometimes!) Well, I went to his link at http://www.betterdayalliance.org/shop.html and ordered some more magazines.
Apparently it does not take much to make a big difference. It was nice to do what I would have done anyhow and feel good about it. I believe this is a lightly tapped area that will soon explode. It could really change the face of retail since anyone can become an affiliate and most people would choose to give to charity if it cost them no more then giving it all to some store owner. So maybe my few dollars won't change the world, but every bit helps. Voting with dollars is a great way to vote for change, and even I can get on board with that! After all, if I can be selfish and buy myself things, AND be giving and help people who need it at the same time, well, that is a no brainer. So spend your dollars wisely, because it really does matter.
