Self-Help Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is more than a minor annoyance to your partner; it can be detrimental to your emotional and physical health.

Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud, chronic snoring, gasping, a cessation of breath, and restlessness during sleep. These can also interfere with the sleep of your spouse, which alone may be reason enough to seek solutions for sleep apnea. In addition, sleep apnea can result in problems such as:

• Excessive daytime sleepiness
• Chronic dry mouth
• Frequent morning headaches
• Cognitive disruptions
• Depression and mood wings
• Heart failure
• High blood pressure

If you are noticing any of these symptoms, thinking about at-home treatment for your sleep apnea may be the best thing you can do.

Home Remedies for Sleep Apnea
First and foremost: if your smoke, quit. Smokers are three-times more likely to develop obstructive sleep apnea, and quitting has been shown to significantly decrease your risk for this disorder.

Other home treatments for sleep apnea include:
• Lose weight – obese people are more likely to develop sleep apnea
o Exercise regularly – getting at least 3 hours of exercise every week can help restore restful sleep and decrease your risk of sleep apnea
o Eat a healthy diet complete with fresh fruit, vegetables, and plenty of water
• Refrain from alcohol and narcotic usage
• Shoot for at least 8 hours of sleep every night
• Sleep on your side, using a body pillow if necessary to increase comfort

These remedies are often successful at treating sleep apnea. However, if your condition continues, it may be time to seek a professional sleep apnea treatment.

Professional Treatments
There are several treatments for sleep apnea. Some people benefit from a CAP machine which increases oxygen flow by pushing oxygen through a mask worn during sleep. This is not the best solution for everyone as these machines can be noisy and the masks may be uncomfortable.

A common sleep apnea treatment is a snore guard. This is a comfortable mouthguard that is customized to your mouth to help keep your tongue and soft palate in place. This helps keep your airways open and can effectively treat most cases of sleep apnea. Combining a snore guard with the lifestyle changes listed above is often the most effective way to treat this common disorder.
