Although sedation dentistry is not for everyone, it is generally safe for patients in good overall health who experience:

• A fear of dental procedures
• A need for multiple dental procedures
• A strong gag reflex
• Conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD), which prevent you from holding your mouth open for long periods
• Sensitive teeth

Sedation dentistry can be used for most dental procedures, including routine check-ups and teeth cleanings. Sedation may also be administered for a number of cosmetic dentistry procedures including:

• Dental bonding
• Dental crowns
• Dental fillings
• Dental implants
• Lumineers
• Periodontal therapy
• Porcelain veneers
• Teeth whitening

There are different types of sedation available, depending on your individual condition and the procedures to be performed. The most common types of dental sedation are:

• Oral sedation, also referred to as conscious sedation
• Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas
• Intravenous (IV) sedation

Oral sedation is also referred to as conscious sedation and is the most common type of sedation used for general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry procedures. Oral sedation entails taking a prescription sedative prior to your visit.

This sedative will put you in a state of heightened relaxation for the duration of your appointment, although you will remain conscious, able to breathe freely and communicate with your sedation dentist. The sedative also has an amnesiac property; most patients have little to no memory of their visit after the effects of the sedative subside.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is combined with oxygen and inhaled through a mask prior to your procedure and, like oral sedation, provides a relaxed but conscious sedation. Your dentist can control the amount of nitrous oxide required for your procedure. Like oral sedation, laughing gas typically provides procedural amnesia.

IV sedation is used primarily by oral surgeons or dentists with specialized sedation training; it is rarely administered in general dentistry settings.

With any sedation procedure, you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
