Different treatments have been employed including light therapy, antidepressant medication, cognitive behavior therapy, ionized air administration and supplementation of hormone melatonin.
Symptoms usually include lethargy, tendency to oversleep, overeat especially carbohydrates which usually leads to weight gain. Patients also tend to isolate themselves with thoughts and feelings of negativity and pessimism. People experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder usually report an inability to participate in pleasurable activities. As in classical depression the symptoms can include irritability, reduced appetite, sleep disturbances and decreased sex drive. A visit to a doctor to establish the seasonal pattern and a possible relationship to a Bipolar Affective Disorder may be useful.
Treatment is effective, though most of these seasonal disturbances are self remitting. Light therapy and treatment with certain antidepressant medication may be needed to reduce morbidity and suffering.
