Say NO to Indifference

The article "Say No to Indifference" is an insight into how indifference on the part of over one billion people can affect the future of the one of the world's largest economies. This article is a humble appeal from the author to the reader to say no to indifference and yes to healthy work ethics.

Dear Friend,

Greetings to you!

I am sure you must have heard the rhyme:

“Piggy on the railway line…up picking stones.
Down came a railway engine, crushing piggy’s bones.
Ooh cried Piggy, that’s not fair…
Aah cried the engine driver I don’t care.”

This rhyme very well conveys the attitudes that we Indians have. The “I don’t care” attitude. The attitude which will never take us anywhere.

Known for over 5000 years for the diversity of its culture, inclusiveness of its people and convenience of its geography, India, one of the world’s largest democracies with a dynamic and able financial system, India has come to the forefront today as a global resource for industry in manufacturing, services as well as agriculture.

Nevertheless all is not rosy in the India story. Much water has flown under the bridge since we became independent, but we still range in the emerging economy / developing economy bracket. We still have not undertaken measures to guarantee a balanced economic development, sustainable and sufficient physical and social infrastructure facilities. Fundamental issues like water shortage, electricity shortage, employment opportunities, pruning the accessible talent pool, have not yet been addressed.

It is essential for us to analyze the reasons which lurk behind the success stories of countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Japan etc and why we still are in the “developing” bracket in spite of becoming independent much before these countries and in spite of enjoying much better resources and potential than these countries. It’s time to put on our thinking caps.

The catch in the story is clear…these countries have killer instinct. The difference between their people and us is that they care…we don’t. They have the drive to work and the motivation to survive a competition however tough with sheer grit and determination…attributes which most of us don’t have. We are indifferent towards most issues. A feeling of “Chalta Hai” prevails in our country. You may think this to be too trivial to be considered a cog in the economic wheel. But it is this small issue that makes a huge difference.

Just like in football, even in life, if we do not know where the goalposts are, we will not be able to go far. Once we have made up our minds to work towards a radiant future, we need to set firm goals.

These goals should pertain to ensuring balanced development of the Indian economy. Just being driven by services isn’t enough. After all standing on one leg is a difficult and risky task. We have to fix the nuts and bolts of all sectors and corners of the economy in order to enable a healthy growth path. It can push up the country's annual growth rate to a double digit figure. But to sustain such growth some complementary policies will be needed such as boosting the investment rates, developing the domestic industry base and strengthening their performance etc.

We should move step by step, concentrate on a few things and do these well. We need to reduce the number of public holidays and be conscientious in performing any given task efficiently. Instead of “arm chair philosophy” action would certainly speak louder. Instead of shirking work and shirking blames, we now have an opportunity to make good the case.

You may think how can I as an individual make a difference? But the answer my friend, stares back point blank. All we have to do is ask what we can do for our country. We can do our respective duties with sincerity and focus. With the betterment of each activity be it farming or manufacturing or be it banking or carpentry, the economy will flourish as every individual unit is hoping and contributing towards it.

If people can find reward for their enterprise, rely on contracts and promises, and pay their bills and taxes without having to battle a labyrinthine bureaucracy, then government would not have to shoulder the burden of driving the economy. It would run on its own steam.

Each one of us, you, me and everyone else should think in the lines of…

 ” Am I correct in passing on my work or duty to someone else?”
 “Am I right in taking / paying bribe?”
 “Was I right in overcharging the company on an official trip?”

All these may seem small in magnitude but they certainly make a massive difference. And not realizing this will amount to indifference. And that indifference will ruin us and our future generations.

In the early 80’s, super computer was denied to India. We decided to go it alone using a route of parallel processing. By late 80’s, we demonstrated the Padam 8000 super computer and by 1992, we exported these super computers to Canada, Germany and Russia. At that time, the headline on the Washington Post read “Angry India does it”. That is the glory of India.

Our future my friend and the future of our country lies in our own hands!

Jai Hind!

Wishing you well!
