Save Your Commuter Dollars and Carpool or Park and Ride

Those of us who do not live in major cities find ourselves realizing that the area we live in isn’t designed with mass transportation in mind – a point that is reinforced once any one of us visits New York, Atlanta or Chicago. We may find that a car trip is nearly impossible to avoid due to the distance to the destination.

Carpooling happens in many forms. For example, there is a major theme park south of Columbus, Ohio just off I-71. Those who live in the area have access to a park and ride lot. This blends the carpool idea with mass transit. An individual parks his or her car at one of these lots and rides a bus or other high occupancy vehicle to where they are going throughout the week. Those who don’t have access to park and ride lots or choose not to use them have several other options ranging from informal carpools to formal ride sharing. The informal carpools, which may be referred to as casual carpools, often form as the result of a common or similar destination.

The difference between informal and casual carpools

Informal carpools tend to form around people who have some relationship, whether it be friends, family, or co-workers. In contrast, casual carpools usually form between strangers. Doing so in some areas gives the vehicle legal access to the high occupancy lane, or the car pool lane; though one should check the local ordinance to verify the number of people required for using this type of lane.

Other options for those with longer commutes are to combine types of carpooling start with a casual carpool to the nearest park and ride lot if you live in the same general area.
Car pooling is something to consider, and possibly use especially if you’re trying to save money on gas. You can find people in your very own neighborhood with whom to car pool with the help of car pooling websites such as MyCasualCarpool.com. Finding someone with whom to car pool doesn’t have to be difficult.
