Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is the “Born Free Country” where Joy Adamson Livid with the Lions. A combination of three reserves 330 Km north east of Nairobi, lies in the Brooding austere badlands that divide Kenya’s central highlands and Ethiopia.

The reserve offers a unique vista of rounded hills undulating semi arid plains and a rugged area with steep ravines. The mix of wood and grassland with reverie forest and swamp is home to a wide variety of animals and birdlife.

Over 365 species of birds have been recorded. There is wide variety of animal and bird life seen at Samburu National Reserve Animals commonly seen are Elephants, lions, cheetahs, grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffe gerenuks, buffalos, oryx, grants, gazelles, dikdiks and water bucks. These include the famous Somali Ostriches ( distinguished by there unique purple/ blue legs during mating season., kingfishers, humming birds, eagles guinea fowls and vultures, The Uaaso Nyiro river’s magnificent displays are the long and huge crocodile. These crocodiles exceed six meters (20 feet) from snout to tail.

There are a number of luxurious lodges and tented camps. In March 1998 Samburu shaba played host to the cast and crew of the Born Free:, true life story of George and joy Adamson and starred both Kenyan Actors and international; film stars, and more recently true life reality filmmakers of the survivor film series.

Temperatures during the day are refreshingly hot, especially if you had a rough winter in your home country, but tends to cool during the night. The natural serenity that is evident here is because of the its distance from the development, industries and inaccessibility of the reserve for many years
