Saint Patrick's Day: An Undying Spirit

Thanks to the great Saint Patrick, the Irish have a holiday on March 17th! Traditional blessings of:

"Leprechauns, castles, good luck and laughter;
Lullabies, dreams and love ever after.
Poems and songs with pipes and drums;
A thousand welcomes when anyone comes..."

will transport you to a land of fairy tales, love and good cheer. As Irish immigrants spread around the world, so did their traditions and culture. Celebrations of Saint Patrick's Day in Ireland are perhaps, the most elaborate of all but several countries over the world provide strong competition with fancy parades and celebrations. By birth or not, everyone is Irish on this fun filled day.

Green is the color of Ireland and more especially so on this day. For all those busy with Saint Patrick's Day activities, green signifies abundance, renewal, growth, health and life! The shamrock helps display this thought and calms worried minds. Everyone is looking for a pot of leprechaun’s gold and luckily it is not that difficult to find, at least not on March 17th. Maybe what we are looking for is not really material wealth but the joy, laughter, dreams and love of one and all around which is as precious as gold to us. The happiness which is spread and shared with everyone, a carefree spirit of victory and hope is the real wealth. The handing down of tradition and culture to the future generations is what this treasure is all about. It's pride of place, pride of our cultural background.

Stories of the Blarney Stone is another such example of passing on traditions and beliefs. A particularly Happy Saint Patrick's Day would ideally start with St Patrick’s Day poems and wishes, followed by events like St Patrick's Day Parades and Run. Traditional activities and stories would be sprinkled all over the day leading to an evening of singing and music. The foot tapping to the sounds of the fiddle and ‘The Chieftains’. Corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, 'bubbles and squeak' ( my favorite! ) and beer of course, certainly make the music in the air sound sweeter. And all of this on a background of refreshing green!

A special day is just another excuse to spend some quality time with the people who matter to us and so for people who live away from their friends and family, the day seems only half as good. Going green and sending St Patrick's Day ecards, greeting cards, gifts and making phone calls is a way to stay connected, even from far away.

While getting gifts and cards is fun, my favorite part of the tradition is when I get to pinch someone for not wearing green. It's so much fun to tease and greet irrespective of everything else. For me, March 17th marks victory, a victory of mankind over all its daily troubles and everyday problems. It is a chance to celebrate the ability to rejoice in spite of everything, an opportunity to rise above all challenges to spread joy and hope. St Patrick's Day means warmth, growth and an undying youthful spirit. Finally, I guess in true Irish accent, the following lines from Thomas Daly best portray the spirit which can make St Patrick's Day 2008 fun and memorable for the whole gang.
