A stronger presence on the road means more attention should be paid to the safety of operating a vehicle this size. Safety regulations have helped to decrease the number of truck accidents involving commercial vehicles even with the amount of them on the road increasing.

Commercial Driver Safety

A commercial driver is required be both safe and time-efficient. Training for a professional driver is much more detailed than for the average passenger vehicle because of the truck size. Although close attention is given to safety by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrations regulations, accidents still happen. Bad habits can lead to driver fatigue and poor decisions. Fatigue is sited as one of the biggest concerns in the causes of truck accidents. Commercial trucks are subject to strict regulations concerning the number of hours a driver must rest and how long their truck can be operating continuously. When safety is sacrificed for speed, it can be a deadly combination resulting in wrongful death.

FMCSA Statistics Show:

-Increase in number of registered large trucks
-Increase in miles traveled by large trucks
-Decrease in number of injury accidents over the years
-Decrease in number of fatal accidents over the years
-Commercial drivers are less likely to be driving under the influence
-Commercial drivers are more likely to be wearing a seat belt

Passenger Car Driver Safety

A passenger driver often underestimates the way a large truck can move and will perform normal driving acts that around a commercial vehicle can be reckless. Stopping too quickly or pulling out in front of a large truck are common mistakes. It is also interesting that most accidents involving a truck do not happen in bad weather when people may try to drive more cautiously. Instead, it is more common to be in an accident with a truck when the weather would not pose a problem. This means more caution when operating or driving near large trucks should be used at all times.
