Its nice to give Roses on Valentines Day, after all it is a Valentine tradition. However, giving bunches of roses year after year can get a bit predictable.

This Rose ball or Sphere is a great way to show off beautiful roses, but best off all, this ball of roses will last all of February and well into December ? The roses used are artificial roses. These rose balls make a great gift to give or a really beautiful room or table decoration for Valentines Day.

To make a Rose Ball you will need...

A Polystyrene ball (you will find these in assorted sizes in your local craft shop)
Some ribbon for hanging the Ball,
Artificial red roses, they could be foam roses, silk roses or even those wooden roses, the preference is yours,
Some craft or florist wire,
PVA Glue,
Wire cutters and a knitting needle about size UK 11.

First you need to make a ribbon hanger for the ball. Take a length of ribbon and fold it in half to make a loop. Scrunch the ends of the ribbon together and bind them in wire, to make a stiff section about 1.5 cm from the end.

The polystyrene ball should have lines on it and an indication to where the centre top is. Push the knitting needle into this point. Push the knitting needle in about 2 cm deep, and pull it out again. Add a dab of glue to the hole, and push the ribbon hanging loop into the hole as deep as you can.

To insert a rose into the ball you first need to trim the stem of the rose to about 1.5 cm in length. Then make a hole in the polystyrene ball with the knitting needle as you did for the hanging ribbon. Glue the hole and around the hole with PVA glue, and then push the stem of the rose into the ball.

You need to keep the roses as close together as possible for best effect.

In addition to roses you could also add leaves to the ball to add colour.

You could also make some ribbons to add. Take a length of ribbon the same colour as the hanging ribbon and make a loop that is just a bit taller then one of the roses. Then make two more loops in this way and cluster all of the ends together at the bottom. In he same way that you bound the hanging loop ends in wire, bind these ribbon ends with wire and add them to the ball in the usual way.

When the whole ball is covered in roses, ribbons and leaves allow the glue to dry. Your Ball is now ready for giving or using for decoration.

Instead of a rose ball you could try a different shape. Your local craft shop will also have polystyrene hoop shapes and hearts, which would also be ideal for this craft idea.

Also why not try making 3 balls which hang down in descending sizes linked together with a length of ribbon. (You would been to bind both ends of the ribbon and push one end into one ball at the bottom and the other end into where the hanging ribbon would go on the next ball)
