Unless you find a really good company with fair pricing and a good reputation, professional roofing can be expensive. You want to do everything in your power to avoid making that call unless it is absolutely necessary. Thankfully, there are many things you can do to help maintain the dome of your domicile. By staying on top of maintenance, you can put off that call to the professionals and save a lot of time and money in the process.

One of the most important aspects of preventative roofing is to inspect the structure itself on a regular basis. This is especially true is you’ve recently had high winds or a storm of any kind. This can bring damage and broken shingles, both of which should be repaired and replaced as soon as possible. Not only are singles each important in their own right, missing ones can deteriorate the overall structure. In many cases, insurance will cover the cost of replacement. If you’re inspecting the structure after snowfall, be very careful, as the precipitation can make the surface dangerously unpredictable and difficult to walk on. In normal circumstances, it’s a good idea to wait until Spring to hop up there and take a full assessment of any damage that might have occurred.

Keeping a clean surface is also an important part of roofing maintenance. Take the time at least once a season to clear the storm drains and gutters of leaves and other debris. This type of debris can build up and cause major structural damage over time. For most surfaces, a good push broom will be just the tool you need to clean off the debris. Use your hands or a garden shovel to clean out the leaves from the gutters. Make sure you use this opportunity to do another thorough inspection. The dirt and debris could have been covering up some of the problem areas.

While it’s essential to clean out the gutters, you also want to make sure you take care of the gutters themselves. They perform a very important function and should be maintained properly. If you have a lot of trees around your house, you might find gutter shields worth looking into. These shields attach to the gutters and keep much of the larger leaves and debris from clogging the pathways. Of course, even these need maintenance, so make sure the leaves and debris are not simply piling up on top of the guard.
