Sustained moisture seepage can sometimes cause the cracked seam to break-off, creating a hole. Whatever the issue at hand you should know the basics to becoming your own roofer where simple repairs are concerned. With the right tools and knowledge, most maintenance tasks can be easily executed by the homeowner themselves.
Supplies:
Rubber Cement
Caulk
Warm Water
Broom
Silicone Hand-Roller
Paintbrush
Plumber’s Probe
Ethanol
Urethane-based Sealant
Seam Tape
Material Substitute
Utility Knife
Preparation
When dealing with a leak, ensure that the seam and surrounding area are thoroughly cleaned. Remove the debris and lose concrete bits using a broom or mop. Try using a plumbers probe to make sure that the seams don’t have any moisture seepage. Next, scrape away any and all traces of adhesive deposits. Ideally, the leaking area should be dabbed with warm water. The act helps to stabilize movable concrete bits. Ethanol should be rubbed around the cracked rubber seams as well. Once the water has been completely absorbed, break the cracked seam off.
Tending Leaks
Remove the rubber sealant from its packaging and apply with a paintbrush making sure to coat the internal parts of the seam. You might also try using a paint roller for uniformity purposes. Once applied, apply pressure on to the sealant to ensure its entrance in the various crevices surrounding the crack. Smooth the repaired seam using a silicone roller to eliminate the possibility of air bubbles that hamper the bonding process. If any spacing is found between the repaired seam and its adjoining surfaces, bind them with a quality seam tape.
You may end up finding that the repair requires a more skilled knowledge base than your own. In cases such as these, it’s always recommended that you seek the consultation of a trained professional. By doing so, you just may end up saving yourself a large sum of money and some hassle down the road.
