The romantic suspense genre is a sub genre of the romance novel. At the centre of the plot is a suspense or intrigue that the main characters or the protagonist has to solve. The romance element comes from the woman who is one of the protagonists and the relationship that develops between her and the hero. The heroine is presented as a victim of a crime or even an attempted crime and she embarks on a journey to solve the mystery. In her endeavours, she is helped by the hero who is also her protector. Typically, he is in a police officer or an FBI agent and is in a position to assist her in her investigation.
Romance novels, a genre whose primary focus is on relationships and the romantic love between the main protagonists, have an optimistic ending which is emotionally satisfying. The main conflict of the novel as well as the climax involves the theme of love. Romantic suspense, on the other hand, is a sub-genre of romance novels. Romantic suspense novels involve a certain sense of mystery that surround the main theme of love. In such novels you will find the female protagonist being victimized in a crime and she seeks help from the hero to solve the mystery.
A good romantic suspense author will make sure that the novel as well as the story is brim full with twists, turns, secrets, betrayals and hidden nuisances. In a perfect romantic suspense novel the tension escalates slowly and steadily. The typical romantic suspense novels make the heroine a victim of the crime and the hero is the guardian angel, who will help her out and save her in any way possible. The hero can play the roles of a police officer, body guard, intelligence officer and many more.
The heroine can either be in the captivation of the villain or can work with the hero to disclose the suspense and solve the mystery. The end is generally a happy ending, where in, the mystery is solved, the villain is caught behind the bars or killed and the hero and heroine have developed a strong liking for each other and got into a perfect relationship.
The difference between a pure romantic novel and a romantic suspense novel is that a romantic suspense does not use very emotional and intimate dialogues and scenes like the pure romantic novel. Mystery is a crucial part and so the romance and intimacy is balanced due to the presence of the element of suspicion and mystery.
