Rocking It in Las Vegas Nevada

Las Vegas is coming out of the slump. Read the proof. Come visit!

Two Ferris Wheel projects have been authorized by Clark County. These are not your tiny mall or fair wheels. You’ve not seen the likes of these, unless you’ve taken the spin on the 443 ft tall London Eye that opened in 2000 or the 541 ft. Singapore Flyer that opened in 2008.

One project is planned across from the Mandalay Bay; the second wheel is planned adjacent to McCarran International Airport where the clearing of the 39-acre parcel has already begun. The exact details of the second project have not been disclosed. All we know is that its 32 cabins will carry up to 30 people and that it is seeking $400 million in financing!

The wheel near Mandalay Bay will be 500 ft., have 40 gondolas and have a roller coaster built nearby.

It will be developed in two phases. A temporary 200-foot “sky wheel” will be built in the first phase, along with six other amusement rides. Ed Garcia, the developer’s attorney, told the commission this is so they could get the project up and running, since the permanent 500-foot wheel would take about 18 months to construct. Once the 500-foot wheel is constructed, the 200-foot wheel would be removed, along with two other rides to create space for the larger wheel. This project will staff about 200 construction workers and have about 200 permanent positions once the facility is open.

Secondly, the Caesars Palace tower is to be transformed by a multimillion-dollar renovation into a 180-room hotel that hews to Nobu’s Japanese theme, with a 9,500 square-foot Nobu restaurant and lounge at its base. Nobu restaurant has long been known for upscale Japanese cuisine that draws jet-setters to its 25 locations around the world. Now Nobu is bringing its cachet to a different sort of setting: a hotel.

Nobu guests will also be within a quick jaunt of Caesars amenities, including its 50,000-square-foot spa and its concert hall, this week featuring Celine Dion. The project is being billed as a boutique hotel on the Strip.

Guests of the Nobu boutique hotel will have the ability to enjoy the rest of the property but will have a self-contained experience within the hotel and restaurant and lounge if they want to just enjoy the Asian ambience of the tower. The project is expected to be completed in 12 to 15 months.

Lastly, if one group of deep-pocketed investors has its way, downtown Las Vegas will soon be home to three shiny new stadiums that could accommodate sports ranging from baseball to basketball to hockey. The cost? A mere $1.575 billion.
Led by developer Chris Milam, the group is optimistic that, if all the pieces fall into place, it can break ground on the spot — located near where Interstate 15 and US Route 95 meet — sometime this fall. First, however, the investors have to fend off of a competing plan to build a 40,000-seat football stadium to host UNLV sports.

This multi-facility Las Vegas National Sports Center dismisses the proposed UNLV Now stadium as "a single 40,000 fixed seat venue that is appropriate in size only for collegiate football. There is no professional sports franchise which can use a building of this size. Consequently, the UNLV Now building will have little potential to generate meaningful revenue to offset its cost."

So a battle looms for Las Vegas stadium supremacy. But what might city residents look forward to if this three-building proposal ever comes to fruition?
