There are many reasons why a person gets rhinoplasty, aka a nose job. This procedure may be purely aesthetic where you simply aren’t happen with the nose you were born with. You can change the shape and size to better suit your face. Another reason is to fix a defect that inhibits the breathing process. The effects of injury or trauma can also be corrected through reconstructive rhinoplasty.

Remember the famous scene where Marsha was whacked in the face with a football? Her nose quadrupled in size! When you fracture or dislocate it, you are often left with unsightly bumps and the it may heal crooked. When the cartilage or bones are fractured, there really isn’t a lot that can be done other than repositioning it and stabilizing it until it heals.

Rhinoplasty can be performed after the initial injury has healed and you can see exactly what you are left with. Didn’t Marsha’s heal back to its perfect little shape? Yeah, that doesn’t happen in real life. Scar tissue, crooked cartilage and improperly positioned bones are the usual tell-tale signs of a broken one.

A break or dislocation does not just cause cosmetic issues, it can also cause breathing problems. Damaged cartilage, crooked bone may both impede the airways and should be corrected. Using either the closed or open technique, the surgeon can go in and clean up the damage, reposition the bones and cartilage and even graft tissue if necessary.

The open technique involves an incision across the columella, that wall between the nostril openings. The closed techniques involve two incisions inside each nostril. The technique your surgeon uses is determined by the type and location of the damage that needs to be corrected. Even with the open incision, the scar is barely visible.

If you decide to have corrective surgery, you might want to consider fixing other things about your nose that you don’t like. Have you always thought the tip was too rounded or too sharp? While the plastic surgeon is fixing the crooked aspect or removing bumpy scar tissue, he can also sculpt the nose you’ve always wanted. You’re already under so why not make the most of it?

If you want to correct an old-break or a recent one through rhinoplasty, find an experienced plastic surgeon who is board certified. Look at his before and after pictures of prior corrective surgeries. Ask yourself: Do you like the end results? Do they look natural?

It sits there in the center of your face, reminding you of an embarrassing or scary event in your life. But, you don’t have to live with the reminder of past trauma to the nose.
