The road to recovery after a rhinoplasty requires the utmost patience. Initially, the face and nose will be swollen, bruised and quite sore and minor bleeding should be expected. While these side effects tend to subside after the first couple of weeks, minor swelling can remain for a period of months. In fact, full recovery may take up to a year. In this article, we will outline what to expect throughout the healing process.

For the first 24 hours following the surgery, patients are encouraged to stay in bed with their head elevated. The nose itself will ache, the face will feel puffy, and a minor headache is typical. Pain is generally managed through prescription medications provided by the operating physician.

After the first two to three days, bruising and swelling will have reached its peak. Bleeding will persist throughout the first few days of recovery, and patients are asked to refrain from blowing their nose during the first week. In addition, patients will be advised not to bend downward at an angle where the head is below the heart as this is known to increase bleeding and swelling. Following the first few days, the nasal packing will be removed. The splint and stitches will be removed around two weeks afterward.

Two to three weeks post surgery, much of the swelling and bruising will have subsided. Residual swelling is common for a period of several months to a year afterward, however it is not generally noticeable to anyone other than the patient and surgeon.

Most patients are able to return to work after a week or so provided all post operation instructions are strictly abided by. Sports and heavy lifting should be avoided for a period of two weeks in addition to any activities that could possibly result in a blow to the nose. In addition, airline travel is discouraged during the first few post-operative weeks.

Glasses and contact lenses can be worn at whatever point the patient feels up to wearing them. However, those who wear glasses will be required to tape them to the forehead or have them affixed to their cheeks for the first six weeks or so.

In order to find out more in regard to rhinoplasty recovery specifics, the best place to begin is through contacting a board certified plastic surgeon. He or she will best be able to outline exactly what to expect and answer any questions you may have.
