The Tecra range is thick-skinned work laptops that are designed to be tough, secure and to keep you always connected. Built for business people on the move, all Tecra products have built in wireless connectivity and come with the unique Toshiba EasyGuard features for added security, protection and durability.
Toshiba Tecra M10, which is about 1.5 inch thick and the lid alone accounts for 11mm of the laptop’s thickness and available in a matte black and metallic dark grey color scheme. It weighs about 2.44kg and measures 336.8 x 245.0 x 36.4-38.4mm.
The new laptop based on Intel's Centrino 2 vPro platform, packs a decent, 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo processor, the T9400, backed by 3GB of 800MHz DDR 2 memory. The laptop sports a capacious casing that has a standard 2.5in, 5400rpm, Sata hard drive of 250GB capacity and a multi-format DVD rewriter. It has four USB ports out of which, one used as an eSata connector, so the laptop’s well able to take advantage of the latest in external storage technology.
Configuration
Toshiba Tecra M10 has the Centrino brand, which means the M10's 802.11n Wi-Fi is provided by an Intel chip and the GMA 4500MHD graphics core integrated into the GM45 chipset that drives the M10's 14in, 1440 x 900 matte displays. The M10 comes pre-loaded with Windows Vista Business, and Toshiba's also thrown in a nice line of utilities designed to make connecting to networks and wireless devices through its Bluetooth, rustling up a set of recovering discs, managing the hardware, creating a bootable SD card, burning CDs and data discs, and keeping the machine's software up to date.
Built
When we look around the machine, the left side presents said RS-232 and USB/eSata ports, and an ExpressCard 54 bay and a multi-format memory card slot which supports various types of usable cards. There are seven LEDs in the front of the laptop which shows the status of various functions, a microphone and 3.5mm audio input and output sockets, the latter fed through an endlessly turning volume dial. In the right the user can find the optical drive, the remaining USB ports, a 56Kb/s modem outlet and a smartcard reader. This feature will be handy for security minded IT departments. In the back of the M10 have power, Gigabit Ethernet and VGA ports.
Performance
According to various experts, the performance of the laptop is not up to expectation. It has the same integrated GPU as the Dell Lattitude E6400 and Toshiba's own Portege M750, but the laptop achieved similar scores in 3DMark06 graphic test. The M10's native resolution is a lot higher than the two models, but it will hinder the relative PCMark05 graphics performance.
Battery life
It provides life to the machine for just 1h 21m, when the screen was kept on maximum brightness throughout with Wi-Fi on and connected to access point. But on realistic workload, M10 run for three hours or so.
Models & Pricing
Toshiba's M10 range stretches to eight models, running from £631 (about $935) to £1034 (about $1532).
